Creating a Web-based Community of Practice

January 13, 2010 By

Connected Beginnings’ website development project is nearing completion. This undertaking, which has been in development for the past 18 months, was designed to launch in two phases. Phase one, Connected Beginnings’ public website, debuted last spring (2009). Phase two is scheduled for launch in the spring of 2010.

Creating a web-based community of practice to augment face-to-face training and consultation was a dream of Connected Beginnings’ founder, Libby Zimmerman. With the help of technology consulting firm, Database Designs, the support of the United Way of Mass. Bay & Merrimack Valley and the steady leadership of Connected Beginnings’ staff member, Laura Beals, we see that dream nearing realization.

Beyond the public website, phase two features will allow trainers and consultants to communicate with one another and Connected Beginnings mentors and “master teachers”, even when they are separated by time and distance. Discussion boards, resource libraries, training calendars, and live group chat capabilities, will offer participating trainers and consultants access to information and materials relevant to the courses they teach and the providers with whom they consult.
